What Is Addiction And How Does It Affect You?

People can suffer from addiction to any substance or activity, but for many, addictions to alcohol, drugs and other substances can take over their lives. They may experience feelings of shame, helplessness and a lack of control, as well as having to live with the physical health impacts of substance misuse.

While drug and alcohol addiction can be extremely life-limiting, addictions to other substances like tobacco, caffeine or sugar can be equally difficult to deal with. They may also come hand-in-hand with other conditions like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, PTSD, ADHD and others.

The causes and impacts of addiction can vary from person to person, but our trained therapists understand and empathise with how you’re feeling, and offer a range of addiction therapies to help you get the support you deserve.

How Online Therapy Can Help Addiction

Online addiction therapy can help you understand what may be causing or contributing to your addiction and help you develop a range of coping strategies to retake control of your life.

Addiction can be very complex, and everybody is different, but you may end up exploring trauma or another psychological condition that is causing you to self medicate. Perhaps you are reacting to external stimuli or pressures? In which case, cognitive behavioural therapy can help you identify and change your thought processes and actions. Sometimes, practising mindfulness or meditation can help.

Sometimes, such as with drug or alcohol addiction, you may need medical intervention as well, but our trained addiction therapists can work with you to help you overcome your challenges.

Karen Spilsbury

Accredited

Hi, I’m Karen and I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist, and I’m here to help you make sense of what’s going on in your life - whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or just not yourself. I’m not here to “fix” you, because you’re not broken. What I offer is a space where you can lay things down, breathe a little easier, and make sense of what’s been weighing on you. I know that life can feel messy and overwhelming — sometimes we lose sight of who we are, or we keep going until something inside says enough. In our sessions, we slow things down. We look at what really matters to you, and we find ways to move forward that feel authentic and doable. I bring warmth, honesty, and curiosity to my work. Think of me less as someone with all the answers, and more as someone walking beside you, helping you notice the patterns, untangle the knots, and discover your own way through.

Online Anxiety Therapy FAQs

Yes, online talking and behavioural therapy can help people manage and work through some of the psychological causes and effects of their addiction. It can help them understand their feelings and allow them to develop coping strategies and avoid triggers.

Everybody is different so there is no ‘best’ therapy for your addiction. However, talking therapies do help people understand their feelings and recognise harmful thoughts and patterns of behaviour.

Yes. Online addiction therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face sessions. In fact, some people actually prefer the flexibility and discretion it can provide, whilst not having to leave their homes.

Therapy may not suit everybody, and that’s ok. If you find you’re not getting what you need from our online addiction therapy, you can cancel at any time and there are no minimum session amounts.
