How Does Abuse Affect You?

Abuse, regardless of when, where and how it happened, can leave deep, painful and lasting effects. Everybody is different, but you may experience feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. You may even encounter flashbacks, nightmares and physical effects like panic attacks, headaches, sleep and diet issues, or substance addictions.

It’s common for abuse survivors to feel disconnected from others, have problems with trusting or being close to others, or get stuck in patterns shaped by past experiences. You may find you withdraw from relationships with friends, family and partners, find it hard to express emotions, or experience feelings of guilt or shame.

Domestic, physical, emotional or sexual abuse is incredibly difficult to experience and process, but online abuse recovery therapy can start you on the journey of healing and living the life you deserve.

How Online Therapy Can Support Abuse Recovery

Online therapy for abuse recovery can help you process and make sense of your experiences in a safe, understanding and non-judgmental space. Our trained therapists are here to support you at every step and may use a range of different therapies to help you rebuild your life.

This can include approaches like CBT, trauma-informed talking therapy that addresses your needs and emotions, person-centred therapy, or EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) that can help you reframe your experiences.

We understand that recovering from physical, emotional or sexual abuse can be incredibly painful, so there’s no pressure to talk about anything you don’t want to, and you can go at a pace that suits you. Sessions are discreet and flexible, and you don’t even have to have your camera on.

Online Anxiety Therapy FAQs

No. Our online therapists are fully trained and understand that abuse can be an incredibly painful experience to revisit. You don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to, and you can stop at any time. Our online abuse recovery therapy is to help you process your experiences at your own pace.

Everybody is different, so there is no set time it takes to recover from abuse. Regardless of your experiences, we’re here to give you the space and time you need to feel better. Given the complex nature of abuse recovery, some people find they need longer-term support.

Yes. Every session is completely secure, discreet and confidential. Anything you talk about will remain between you and your therapist. There’s no judgment, no pressure and no expectation to talk about anything you don’t want to.

However, there are rare exceptions where a therapist has a legal or ethical duty to break confidentiality, for example, if they believe there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or if a child or vulnerable adult is at risk. If this ever became necessary, your therapist would aim to discuss it with you first wherever possible.

All sessions take place online, at a time and place that suits you. You don’t even have to turn on your camera if you don’t want to.

Therapy is a proven and effective way to explore and understand your experiences of abuse. But it can be a complex subject, and some people find that therapy doesn’t work for them. If that’s the case for you, that’s ok. You can stop at any time.
